Stephen Widener

I’m Stephen Widener and I’m blessed to call Clover home! I like to say that I may not have been born here but I got here as fast as I could! Let me tell you a little about myself, why I’m seeking to represent you on the town council, and what I hope to do if I’m honored with your support.

I’m a Christian and I’m a member of Clover First Baptist Church. I’m far from perfect but the work that Jesus has done in my life and the tender mercies that he has shown to me and the people that I love throughout my life have shaped me into the man that I am. If I accomplish nothing else I hope that by reading this you’ll know that Jesus loves you and that He will meet you wherever you are in life.

I’m a thirty-five years old, my wife, Melissa, and I have been married for six years and we’re blessed to be raising a three-year-old girl and a twenty-one-month-old little boy before we get to meet our third baby in heaven one day. My family, next to my faith, is my top priority in life and they, along with God’s call, are my primary motivation for seeking to serve you.

As a middle school teacher, as a football coach, as a tee ball coach, and as an active church member, I get to interact with a wide swath of people from all stages of life in our community. I’ve seen the great things going on in our community and I have some ideas about how we can make it even better in the future.

If I’m honored with being elected, I will seek to cut the red-tape that often hinders local businesses from setting up shop in town. This would not only make our town a great place for shopping and dining but it will help to provide greater access to diverse job opportunities and greater access to childcare options that so many families in our community are struggling to find.

I will seek to expand the historical overlay zone so that small and local businesses can have access to incentives, like the Bailey Bill, to further revive and revitalize the vacant buildings that lay along the south side of the main square.

I don’t want to allow our town to become a hodgepodge of wildly different buildings that are just like everywhere else. I will work with our community to set an architectural standard for further, new construction in our town to ensure that the unique, Southern charm of our town is celebrated.

I will work to expand and to revamp our parks and recreational facilities by fighting for Clover to have safe, and beautiful facilities and spaces like our neighbors in other communities.

In short, I will fight to make sure that Clover remains a great place to experience Southern hospitality, a great place to do business, and a great place to raise a family!
